Trillium 3 (December 2013)

It’s an all action issue, with Nika the future girl trying to escape her “friends” to return to the temple where she traveled back in time and met Billy the explorer boy. Lemire gives them both some good scenes, but the future ones are so full of exposition the past ones come across a lot cleaner.

Even though they’re exposition heavy too. Just not overloaded.

There’s the sad moment when the future humans decide to exterminate the indigenous people on the planet. Lemire’s metaphor is a little heavy-handed; the comic overcomes it though.

Trillium has its problems, but Lemire is honest with his protagonists, which helps the issue a lot.

While I admire DC’s willingness(?) to use LeMire as an artist, his compositional choices really take a lot of the oomph out of his visuals. Not that his skill set as an artist is bad, just that for the purposes of telling a dramatic story you’re constantly distracted by the oddness of his linework and lack of draftsmanship. Trillium has a decent concept, and LeMire keeps pushing boundaries with page layout, 180 degree shifts, etc., but after three issues, I still don’t really care about the protagonists. I try not to let my sensibilities as a seasoned comics reader and a love of craft get in the way, but ultimately I just look back and wonder whether Jeff Lemire or Matt Kindt should win the award as folk comic artist of the year, a distraction that keeps me from fully enjoying their concepts.
